Getting Started with DMR Digital Radio

October 6, 2026 · 1 min read

Curious about digital voice? DMR (Digital Mobile Radio) is one of the easiest ways to get started. It splits each 12.5 kHz channel into two timeslots, so one repeater can carry two conversations at once, and networks like BrandMeister link repeaters and hotspots around the world.

Quick start

  1. Get a DMR ID for free at RadioID.net.
  2. Pick a radio. Any DMR Tier II handheld or mobile works.
  3. Build a codeplug with the frequency, color code, timeslot and talkgroup for each channel.
  4. Test with Parrot by making a private call to 9990 on BrandMeister to hear your own audio.

Talkgroups to know

TG 3139 is Ohio Statewide, TG 3100 is the USA bridge and TG 91 is Worldwide. Check with the repeater owner for local talkgroups and timeslots.

For a full guide with talkgroups you can tap to copy, see the DMR radio page on k8scs.online. Got a DMR question? Bring it to the Tuesday night net or the next club meeting.

Join us on the air W8CRC Net every Tuesday at 7:00 PM, all check-ins welcome. Club meetings the 1st & 3rd Wednesday at 7:30 PM.
